What have we been focusing on in 2019 so far?
Well after doing our Sanshin no Kata and Kihon Happō in January we continue to review these throughout the year. Partly because of new members, and members moving their way through the ranks, but also because we keep finding the importance of these basic movements in everything we do.
In February and March we studied Togakure Ryū focusing on the escaping forms including various wrist grabs and even some sword attacks. Although we have moved on from much of this already the theme of mutō dori seems to continue. As a result we have dedicated some time on basic sword skills including basic cutting, as well as extra review of the Mutō dori forms. This will continue and evolve throughout the year.
In April we began Shinden Fudō Ryu Dakentaijutsu, and this has been an excellent opportunity to work on practicing how to “control” the opponent by sensing and adjusting to their movements. Something we definitely all need to work on at the dojo, even the teachers.
